Vol. 1. 1963–1966

When Marvel publisher Martin Goodman asked the brilliant Stan Lee to develop a new comic series, he had no idea he would end up with something like The X-Men. No one foresaw that these superheroes would become a true pop-culture phenomenon, not Goodman, not Lee, and not even the visionary futurist Jack Kirby. Conceived by Lee and Kirby as mutants, they began as a charming, motley team of outsiders. They were teenagers with “eX-tra” powers they were born with, not abilities gained from random cosmic rays or an atomic explosion. Trained and led by a sober professor, these heroes were able to save the world from threats and villains.

The earliest stories laid the groundwork for much of what would make the X-Men a crossroads of comics and pop culture. Feared, misunderstood, and persecuted by the public, the mutants fought their own civil-rights struggle. Despite their different powers, the outsiders Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman found safety in their community. Professor Xavier faced his enemy Magneto, who had gathered a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and waged war against all of humanity.

Energized by the push to usher comics into the Marvel Age, Lee and Kirby created a whole roster of villains and characters that would become staples of Marvel mythology: the superpowered siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; the colossal Blob; the unstoppable Juggernaut; Ka-Zar, the jungle dweller of the Savage Land; the star-born demigod known as the Stranger; and Bolivar Trask with his army of Sentinels that hunted mutants. As Lee and Kirby made room for new talent to explore other corners of the Marvel universe, Atlas-era artist Werner Roth teamed up with rising writer Roy Thomas, soon to become a legend himself, to begin their long-running work on the X-Men.

Scaled to match the size of the original artwork, this XXL-format edition contains the first 21 stories of these strange superheroes from 1963 to 1966. In close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), pristine original issues were newly captured for reproduction. Each page was photographed exactly as it was printed more than half a century ago, then digitally restored using modern retouching techniques. Any imperfections from the printing technology of the time were corrected, as if the comics had come fresh off a top-tier 1960s press. To simulate the feel of the original issues, an uncoated paper stock was developed specifically for the Marvel series.

In his foreword, Chris Claremont, the creative force behind the modern X-Men stories, brings the founding years of Lee and Kirby back to life. A substantial essay by X-Men writer Fabian Nicieza, along with original artwork, photographs, and memorabilia, rounds out this journey into the early years of the X-Legends.

© 2023 MARVEL
