Bourgery. Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery cover image

In Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery’s (1797–1849) Atlas of Human Anatomy, anatomical illustration reached an unprecedented level of scientific precision and artistic refinement. To this day, it remains one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical studies ever published. Bourgery, a respected surgeon and anatomist in Paris who nevertheless never attained the academic position he long desired, began work on the ambitious atlas in 1830 in collaboration with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782–1871), a student of Jacques-Louis David. The first volumes appeared the following year, though the monumental project would ultimately require two decades of intensive labor to complete. Bourgery did not live to see the publication of the final section of his eight-volume masterpiece and its supplementary volume, dying prematurely during a cholera outbreak.

The eight volumes cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques — including detailed depictions of the operations commonly performed during the first half of the nineteenth century — as well as general anatomy, embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacob’s spectacular hand-colored lithographs are remarkable for their clarity, richness of color, and technical brilliance. They combine direct anatomical observation with extensive research into medical illustration, resulting in images that are at once scientifically exact and artistically extraordinary. The work offers unparalleled insight into the structure of the human body and continues to fascinate not only medical professionals, but also artists, students, and anyone interested in anatomy and the history of scientific illustration.
