The photographic oeuvre of the visionary Helmut Newton (1920–2004) spans more than five decades and remains unmatched in its breadth, reaching millions of readers through publications such as Vogue and Elle. Throughout his career, Newton transcended the boundaries of traditional photographic genres, bringing the same sophisticated elegance and voyeuristic tension found in his portraits and glamour photography into his fashion work. Early on, he moved beyond the conventional practices of fashion photography, dissolving the boundaries between reality and illusion. He transformed locations such as his own garage or active construction sites into stages that ranged from stark minimalism to dramatic contrast, using them to depict the eccentric lives of the wealthy and glamorous through scenes charged with eroticism and sophistication.
