Marvel Comics Library. Hulk. 1962–1966 cover image

The second Marvel character to emerge in the early 1960s from the creative partnership of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby was far removed from the family dynamic of the Fantastic Four and their globe-spanning superheroics. The Hulk was a monster. The green alter ego of the slight human scientist Bruce Banner was brought to life when he was exposed to massive amounts of gamma radiation from an experimental bomb, transforming into the raging Hulk every time he lost control, and never stopping since.

The Hulk is undoubtedly one of the strangest, strongest, and most fascinating archetypes in the Marvel universe, defying easy explanation. Sometimes at war with other superheroes, sometimes with villains, the United States military, humanity, or even his own alter ego Bruce Banner, he is at once a symbol of unrestrained rage, primal instinct, the destructive potential of the atomic bomb, and human hubris. A modern Prometheus, filled with atomic fire, who will never stop raging and destroying.

Now TASCHEN brings you the Hulk as you’ve never seen him before, in an XXL-format volume that lives up to his reputation. Included are The Incredible Hulk issues #1–6 as well as his appearances in Tales to Astonish. All issues were photographed using TASCHEN’s proven reproduction methods to match the original look of the comics at the time of their first publication. They were also digitally restored using modern retouching techniques to correct problems caused by the cheap, imperfect printing of the era.

A substantial introduction by pop culture and comics expert Douglas Wolk rounds out this extensive package honoring the biggest, meanest, and greenest superhero of all time. It is accompanied by rarely seen original artwork, photographs, and memorabilia that demonstrate the Hulk’s lasting influence on global culture.
