The Star Wars Archives. 1999–2005 cover image
From the moment Star Wars hit the screen in 1977, audiences were both fascinated and horrified by the half-man, half-machine hybrid Darth Vader. In 1999, his creator George Lucas began to tell his backstory: how he grew up as Anakin Skywalker, was trained as a Jedi by Obi-Wan Kenobi, and fell in love with Padmé Amidala, the Queen of Naboo, before turning to the dark side of his nature and becoming more machine than man.

George Lucas recognized early on the cinematic possibilities of emerging digital technology, which enabled him to bring new creatures and worlds to the screen on a scale never seen before. Lucas filmed the first digital blockbuster and faced fierce resistance when he advocated for the adoption of digital production methods. Today, digital cameras, settings, characters, and projections are standard throughout the industry. Lucas was one of the first to establish digital standards and popularize this modern form of filmmaking.
